Sessions 11/20

Supporting the Social Emotional Development of Infants and Toddlers    In this hands-on session, we will gain a working knowledge of the social emotional development of infants and toddlers.  We will examine how building strong relationships, communicating, and being sensitive to the needs and cues of infants effects their development of milestones.  Infants learn by exploring their environment and knowing there is a secure base for them to check back into.  We will actively explore strategies to aid infant caregivers in making their environment the highest quality care for infants.  In a toddler classroom, teachers need to ensure they have a strong relationship established due to the beginning of separation anxiety and stranger danger.  As toddlers are going through changes, teachers must provide behavioral and emotional supports to meet their needs.  By using proactive behavior guidance, responding to cues, redirection, and holding children accountable, the class becomes a well-oiled machine.  This takes intentional planning and effective facilitation on the teacher’s part.  Through collaborative discussion and hands-on activities, we will explore techniques and strategies to support children’s social emotional development.  Shalek Chappill-Nichols, MS, Master Teacher, Educational Research & Development , RAFT.  Lakeshore

This workshop will also explore developmental challenges, what they look like and present as in group care, and what our role can be to bridge in partnership with families around all areas of development, including when there is developmental concerns.  Renee Hernandez Greenfield, Tacoma Community College

Infant/Toddler Language and Communication - Books are the cornerstone of literacy but what the children hear is the cornerstone of language development. In this session we will be describing and defining milestones for children birth to 3 and how they affect the process of acquiring language and literacy skills. During small group activities we will be exploring the power of classroom arrangement and how this influences the acquisition of language and literacy as well as its impact on behavior and classroom management. We’ll look at which books are appropriate at different stages of development. Finally, we will examine the role of the teacher in the classroom.  Shalek Chappill-Nichols, MS, Master Teacher, Educational Research & Development , RAFT.  Lakeshore
