Tuesday, 23 February 2021 - 11am-4pm AEDT Module 1: Overview of Australia’s industrial relations system Safety net of minimum terms and conditions (modern awards and NES); enhancements on the safety net (enterprise bargaining and employment contracts); Fair Work Commission; Fair Work Ombudsman; role of unions and other employee representatives; work health and safety; distinct features of the maritime industry. Module 2 Policies and procedures Drafting effective policies; implementation of policies and procedures; misconduct; discrimination; bullying; work health and safety; diversity; consultation.
Tuesday, March 9, 2021 - 11am-4pm AEDT Module 3: Managing behaviour and performance Dealing with complaints and grievances; conducting investigations; disciplinary processes and outcomes; performance improvement; skills and techniques for dealing with interpersonal issues and having difficult conversations; role of unions/employee representatives in disciplinary processes; individual vs collective issues. Module 4: Termination of employment Unfair dismissal, adverse action and general protections; redundancy and redeployment; proceedings in industrial relations tribunals and courts.
Monday, March 22 - 11am-4pm AEDT via Zoom Module 5: Enterprise bargaining Compliance; strategy; employee representation rights; industrial action; tips and tricks; strategic negotiation; approaches to bargaining
Understanding employment law, human resources and the industrial relations framework in the context of the Australian maritime industry
Who should attend? This course is designed for people managers (HR practitioners, supervisors, senior crew) and those who have regular dealings with employees’ workplace conditions (operations managers, HSEQ, payroll).
Participants will learn about implementing effective and compliant policies and procedures, gain confidence in managing performance and behavioural issues in the workplace to achieve better outcomes and understand the mechanics and strategic elements of enterprise bargaining.
How is the course being run? The course will be delivered via Zoom in 5 modules over three days:
Cancellation policy Bookings made for MIAL courses may only be cancelled in accordance with the cancellation policy. If a person has booked a place on a MIAL course and for any reason is no longer able to attend, the individual may substitute that place to another person by advising MIAL of that substitution in writing at least 7 calendar days prior to the commencement of the course. In the event a course participant is not able to attend the scheduled course, they must notify MIAL that they wish to cancel their attendance no less than 7 calendar days prior to the commencement of the course, in which case they will be entitled to a refund. In the event a cancellation request is received less than 7 calendar days prior to the course commencement, the place is not refundable but may, at MIAL’s absolute discretion, be used as a credit toward a future course. No show: failure to attend a course which has been booked without notification results in all course costs being forfeited. All changes to attendees, course dates, refunds etc will incur a $20 Administration fee.
