Hyman Spotnitz, the founder of Modern Psychoanalysis, began studying the use of psychoanalysis with regressed patients, including those diagnosed as psychotic, in the 1930’s.  Since then, countless clinicians have studied and applied his understanding and techniques.  This event presents such work in community agencies and long-term care facilities.

Presenters: 

Marjorie Goodwin, PsyaD, MS, RN is a faculty member, clinical supervisor and Fieldwork Coordinator at the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis. Dr.Goodwin has over 30 years working as a psychoanalytically informed clinical nurse specialist. She began with an interest in schizophrenia and later expanded this interest to working with individuals in a variety of clinical settings with all psychiatric diagnoses, including dementia.. 

Manuel Harpin, M.A. is a Boston-based psychotherapist. He received his BA from Sarah Lawrence College and an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis where he is pursuing a doctoral degree in Psychoanalysis, Society, and Culture. Mr. Harpin currently works in community mental health as an outpatient clinician and Psychosis Treatment Specialist. His practice centers abolitionist perspectives. 

 

Discussant: 

William Sharp, Psya.D. is a Professor of Psychology at Northeastern University and a training analyst and on the  faculty at the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis where he directors the Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. He has presented nationally and internationally on Freud and his life as well as on the evolution of psychoanalytic theory and technique.

Continuing Education Objectives:

Participants will be able to: 

  1. Identify components of a psychoanalytic diagnosis 
  2. Explore key concepts central to a modern analytic understanding of regressed patients. 
  3. Identify and discuss various interventions in modern psychoanalytic technique (such as commands, questions, mirroring, joining, contact function).
