Below is all the information you will need to successfully register for the MNRD Recreational League!
Participation Requirements:
Be at least 18 years of age
Provide state issued photo identification
Provide your own required gear/ safety equipment (listed below)
NO previous skating skills or knowledge are required for participation
Additional COVID Requirements:
Minnesota Roller Derby is taking extra precautions to reduce the spread of COVID-19 at our practices and events by temporarily instating the following requirements. Please help keep everyone safe and healthy!
At this time, we are requiring all participants to have a completed round of COVID-19 vaccinationsand provide proof of this completed series at your first practice. If you require a medical exemption from this, please email windchill@mnrollerderby.com to work with the Windchill Managers.
Skaters need to provide their own masksfor practices. Until further notice, a mask must be worn over the skaters mouth and nose at all times while at practice, including gearing up, skating practice, and gearing down. Masks may be briefly removed in order to drink water throughout the practice. No exceptions to this will be granted.
Skaters cannot attend practice within 24 hours of experiencing cold-like symptoms. Skaters who have been directed to quarantine due to being a close contact to someone diagnosed with COVID-19 should also not attend practice. Skaters who are diagnosed with COVID-19 need to communicate this to the Windchill Managers if you have attended practice within 5 days of the diagnosis for contact tracing purposes.
Skaters will need to sign in at each practice for contact tracing purposes.
Optional COVID-19 saliva testing will be available on Tuesdays before practice. Results typically take 3-5 days.
Required Gear and Safety Equipment to participate:
-
Roller skates (roller blades not allowed)
-
Multi-impact helmet (roller derby or skateboarding helmet, not biking)
-
Knee pads (thick, roller derby pads recommended but not required. You will fall on these a lot regardless of skill level.)
-
Elbow pads
-
Wrist guards
-
Mouth guard
Other optional safety equipment of hip/butt pads, shin guards, helmet visors may also be used but is not required.
Practice Details:
The Winter/Spring Term runs from late-January through April.
Practices are Sundays from 6:15-8:00pm with exclusively Windchill registered skaters and trainers. Skaters will practice in groups of those with similar skating abilities (very much like in the past for those of you returning).
Practices are also Tuesdays from 7:30-9:30pm with the entire Minnesota Roller Derby league. These practices will be divided into contact and non-contact practices. Those of all skill levels are welcome.
It is not required to attend both practice days to participate.
Practices are held in the Roy Wilkins Auditorium or The River Center Ex Halls located in downtown St Paul. If neither the Roy nor River Center have space available on a given Sunday or Tuesday, no skating practice will be scheduled for that day. There may be non-skating activities scheduled instead, though this is not guaranteed. Schedules will be sent out monthly as we reserve space, and communicated again weekly to remind skaters of any changes or exact locations.
Skaters need to bring all their own gear, mask, a water bottle, and wear athletic clothing. Water fountains are available but should be used exclusively to fill water bottles at this time.
Typical Practice Schedule:
(5 minutes) Get to practice, sign in, and enjoy off-skates warm-up at your own pace.
(10 min) Whole group off-skates warm-up
(15 min) gear up time and self directed on-skates warm up
(10 min) Whole group skating warm-up
(55 min) break into assigned groups by skill level for skating practice
(10 min) Closing announcements, gear down, stretching
Recreational League cost:
$80 + processing fees to be paid during sign up.
Returning Skater from Spring Term 2020: please email Windchill@mnrollerderby.com for a $30 discount code as a credit towards previously canceled practices.
What does this money do? Roller derby has a myriad of costs associated with practice and play. Practice space, venue insurance, safety/emergency equipment and personnel, travel and bout expenses, are some of the larger costs. Small stuff like duct tape and cones to weave around add up, too. Minnesota Roller Derby is skater owned and operated. We all pay in money, time, and contribute our skills to make this awesome sport run!
If the costs associated with any of the fees are prohibitive towards your participation, please email Windchill@mnrollerderby.com and a Windchill Manager will do their best to work with you before signing up.
Additional cost:
WFTDA Insurance:Womans Flat Track Derby Association insurance is a secondary insurance you are required to have to participate in our recreational league program. You must have active WFTDA insurance prior to participation in the first practice to skate with the recreational league. WFTDA insurance costs $75.00 and is active for one year from the date of purchase.
If possible, please purchase this prior to the first day of practice to maximize your skate time. The WFTDA website has a wonderful guide on how to do so. Here is how to find it:
-
Go to the WFTDA website https://wftda.ps.membersuite.com/
-
This is a full set of instructions on how to create an account and purchase WFTDA insurance.
-
You will need to email us ahead of time or be able to show us the confirmation email on the first scheduled practice day. You will not be able to skate until we have verified your purchase of WFTDA insurance.
If you would like help with this prior to the first day of practice, please email skater Miller Light (he/him) at Millerlight8008@gmail.com for assistance. Or, please be prepared to be walked through this process at the first practice prior to participating, and have your card payment method available.
Again, if the costs associated with any of the fees are prohibitive towards your participation, please email Windchill@mnrollerderby.com and a Windchill Manager will do their best to work with you before signing up.
