To Be or Not to Be (1983) is a remake of the 1942 film of the same name. Set in Warsaw, Poland, before the 1939 Nazi invasion, the well-known stars of a Warsaw theater company are preparing a play that satirizes the Nazis. Just prior, the company is performing Shakespeare's Hamlet. Handsome young pilot Lt. Sobinski gives Maria flowers and she tells him to come to her dressing room when the "To be or not to be" speech begins, as her husband will be delivering the monologue. The results, with Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft, are “smashingly funny” (V. Canby, the New York Times).
History of the World, Part I (1981) is an anthology comedy film written, produced, and directed by Mel Brooks. Brooks also stars in the film, playing five roles: Moses, Comicus the stand-up philosopher, Tomás de Torquemada, King Louis XVI, and Jacques, le garçon de pisse. The film is a parody of the historical spectacular film genre, with the four main segments consist of stories set during the Stone Age, the Roman Empire, the Spanish Inquisition, and the French Revolution. Other skits include the giving of the Ten Commandments and the Last Supper. The cast also features Sid Caesar, Shecky Greene, Gregory Hines, Dom DeLuise, and Madeline Kahn, among many others.
Blazing Saddles (1974) is a satirical Western film directed by Mel Brooks that was nominated for three Academy Awards, and is ranked No. 6 on the American Film Institute's 100 Years...100 Laughs list. Brooks appears in three roles: Governor Petomane, a Yiddish-speaking Indian chief, and “a director” in line to help invade Rock Ridge (a nod to Hitchcock). The film satirizes the racism obscured by myth-making Hollywood accounts of the American West, with the hero being a black sheriff in an all-white town. A true American comedic classic.
