Join Dr. Rebecca Linger on a walk around Kanawha State Forest to look for plants with medicinal, toxic or even reputed magical properties. Dr. Linger, program coordinator of the Kanawha Valley Master Naturalists brings her knowledge of ethnobotany and the flora of Kanawha State Forest to WVSTA. Kanawha State Forest is a beautiful area of over 9,300 acres that is located just a few miles out Rt. 119 from Charleston. Prior to the 1930s, the area was heavily timbered and mined for many year before the establishment of Camp Kanawha by the Civilian Conservation Corps. In the 1970s the area was designated as a State Forest and is currently managed by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resource. Miles of trails cut through Kanawha State Forest through a variety of habitats making the site a favorite for naturalists looking for interesting wildflowers, birds and reptiles. Some of the more popular hiking and biking trails include the Spotted Salamander Trail, a paved walkway with braille signage, Rattlesnake Trail, a rigorous hilly one mile hike and Black Bear Mountain Bike Trail a steep biking trail for 2 wheeled adventurers. Steve Beckelhimer will be along on the walk to assist Dr. Linger.
Lunch is included with your registration, but please let us know which meals you will be attending.
