SPACEPLANES: WHY ARE THEY USEFUL AND WHY DON’T WE SEE THEM VERY OFTEN?

WILLIAM SILVERTHORNE,
PhD RESEARCHER, KINGSTON UNIVERSITY LONDON

Event Abstract

For decades, spaceplanes have offered flexible, cheap and easy access to space. However, we’re only just seeing practical spaceplanes taking to the skies, in the form of Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo and soon SpaceShipThree. So if Virgin has SpaceShips flying, then why do we not see Saenger, Hotol or NASP flying us from place to place? What is it that differentiates the spaceplanes that made it into the air and the ones that didn’t?

In this RAeS Heathrow Branch webinar, the speaker will talk propulsion, figuring out how spaceplanes fly, and how engine and propellant choices affect how a spaceplane can operate, and what would make them useful in the modern space industry. He will also talk about how detonation-based combustors may solve some of the problems that are inherent to the spaceplane.
