AIR SERVICES AGREEMENTS - AN INTRODUCTION
MARK BOSLY,
CHIEF AIR SERVICES NEGOTIATOR, UK DEPARTMENT FOR TRANSPORT
Event Abstract
Air Services Agreements (ASAs) are formal treaties between countries – accompanying memoranda of understanding (MoU) and exchanges of formal diplomatic notes. It cover the basic framework and determines who can fly where, when, and how often.
In 1913, in what was probably the earliest such agreement, a bilateral exchange of notes was signed between Germany and France to provide for airship services. The Bermuda Agreement, signed in 1946, by the United Kingdom and the United States, was one of the first ASAs following World War II, and became models for the thousands of such agreements afterwards.
Together with UK’s departure from the European Union, replacement air service agreements need to be agreed upon with the 17 non-EU countries, notably with Canada and the United States, with whom the UK has air traffic rights by virtue of the UK’s membership of the EU.
In this webinar, the RAeS Heahrow Branch is pleased to welcome the UK’s Chief Air Services Negotiator, Mark Bosly, to provide an introduction to the ASAs and an overview of the world of aeropolitics. Mark has been in post for well over a decade and has negotiated numerous bilateral and multilateral ASAs on behalf of the UK government.
