In this CPD activity, you will develop an understanding of what is the pathophysiology of different types of osteoporosis, and how to investigate the effects of vitamin D on muscle strength and prevention of osteoporosis; by end of this activity, you will become familiar with the pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment of osteoporosis in order to enhance patient care. 

Upon the completion of this activity, the participants will be able to;

  • Describe the primary and secondary causes of osteoporosis.
  • Outline the various risk factors for osteoporosis.
  • Appraise the importance of bone mineral density as it relates to fracture risk and the diagnosis of osteoporosis
  • Assess the importance of Vitamin D levels in the management of osteoporosis
  • Describe the non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic osteoporosis treatments discussing the candidates for therapy, choice of drug, and choice of initial therapy.
  • Summarize the advantages of alfacalcidol over plain vitamin D in the treatment of osteoporosis.
  • Dscribe the role of active vitamin D analogues in osteoporosis treatment and prevention
  • Describe the contraindications/intolerance to oral bisphosphonates.
  • Proper management of Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.
  • Discuss how to monitor the response to therapy.
  • Discuss the use of estrogen or estrogen plus progestogen or raloxifene in the management of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
