In this CPD activity, you will develop an understanding of what is the pathophysiology of different types of osteoporosis, and how to investigate the effects of vitamin D on muscle strength and prevention of osteoporosis; by end of this activity, you will become familiar with the pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment of osteoporosis in order to enhance patient care.

Fractures due to osteoporosis have a serious impact on a person's health and quality of life. They can result in chronic pain, long-term disability and death. Osteoporosis is a preventable disease. It remains under-diagnosed and under-treated. One in two women and one in four men over age of 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in her/his remaining lifetime. Each year, women break more bones due to osteoporosis than have a stroke, heart attack, or breast cancer combined. The aim of this session is to discuss the etiology and pathophysiology of different types of osteoporosis to guide the screening and management osteoporosis To achieve this educational aim, the speaker will focus on the Normal bone metabolism illustrating the calcium homeostasis and bone remodeling. As well, he will describe the role of 1,25(OH)2D3 in Ca homeostasis. Then, he will outline the factors affecting the bone remodeling cycle. After that, he will describe the pathophysiology of osteoporosis and the different types of osteoporosis. Also, he will discuss the Sarcopenia and its relation with osteoporosis. Moreover, he will discuss the screening recommendations for osteoporosis. Furthermore, he will describe the diagnostic criteria for osteoporosis Finally, the speaker will discuss the management strategies for osteoporosis
