In this CPD activity, you will develop an understanding of what is the pathophysiology of different types of osteoporosis, and how to investigate the effects of vitamin D on muscle strength and prevention of osteoporosis; by end of this activity, you will become familiar with the pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment of osteoporosis in order to enhance patient care. 

Upon the completion of this activity, the participants will be able to;

  • Describe the primary and secondary causes of osteoporosis.
  • Outline the various risk factors for osteoporosis.
  • Appraise the importance of bone mineral density as it relates to fracture risk and the diagnosis of osteoporosis
  • Assess the importance of Vitamin D levels in the management of osteoporosis
  • Describe the non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic osteoporosis treatments discussing the candidates for therapy, choice of drug, and choice of initial therapy.
  • Summarize the advantages of alfacalcidol over plain vitamin D in the treatment of osteoporosis.
  • Dscribe the role of active vitamin D analogues in osteoporosis treatment and prevention
  • Describe the contraindications/intolerance to oral bisphosphonates.
  • Proper management of Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.
  • Discuss how to monitor the response to therapy.
  • Discuss the use of estrogen or estrogen plus progestogen or raloxifene in the management of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

John Christopher Gallagher
Professor of Medicine and Director of the Bone Metabolism Unit

J.C. Gallagher, MD, is Professor of Medicine and Director of the Bone Metabolism Unit at Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. He has been at Creighton University for 25 years. Dr. Gallagher received his medical and doctoral degrees from Manchester University Medical School in Manchester, United Kingdom. After a 4-year research position in the Medical Research Council’s Mineral Metabolism Unit in England he completed a 3-year Senior Research Fellowship in Endocrinology at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Gallagher served as a Founding member, Trustee and President of the North American Menopause Society between 1990 and 1995. He is Director of the Bone Metabolism Unit at Creighton University Medical Center, Omaha, USA. His research interests include the use of hormone replacement therapy in the prevention of osteoporosis, the role of calcitriol in the treatment of osteoporosis and prevention of falls, and the use of combination therapy in the treatment of osteoporosis. He is on the Editorial boards of JCEM, Menopause and Climacteric. He was a member on the Institute of Medicine Committee on ‘Dietary Reference Intakes for Calcium and vitamin D’ in 2010. Dr. Gallagher is the author of more than 220 papers and 200 abstracts, and is a recipient of the Distinguished Research Career Award from Creighton University and a Career Recognition Award for Vitamin D research from the International Workshops on Vitamin D.
