Every year, Baton Rouge Parents Magazine hosts The Cover Kid Event to find fresh faces to appear on the cover and within the pages of the magazine for the upcoming 12 months.

The Cover Kid Event has been an exciting event to look forward to for over 20 years. The Cover Kid Event is not a beauty contest or a talent show. Children from all walks of life are encouraged to participate! Cover Kids are between the ages of 2 and 17 years, who are good role models for children. We believe that children who shine come in all shapes, sizes, ethnicities, and abilities.

Due to COVID-19, The Cover Kid Event will be different this year. To protect the kiddos and their families, we’re taking the show on the road. However, for those who are unable to attend due to being high risk or having a disability, we have created a virtual opportunity so everyone gets the chance to become a Cover Kid!

Once your child is registered and you have chosen your time, you will receive a Zoom link and at the time of the event. Click the link to join our Event room. There, you and your child will meet us, and a few partners in order to help your child get comfortable with talking through Zoom.

When it is time for your child to meet with a judge, we will then transfer your child and a judge to a "breakout room." There, your child will interview with the judge. This meeting will only last a few minutes. Your children should be prepared to answer questions about themselves. If your child needs any accommodations, please let us know.

Once the interview is complete, the judge's decision will be emailed to you at the end of the following day. You will then know if your child receives a callback. If they do receive a callback, your child will need to record a video (parents will need to help), telling the judges why they should be a Cover Kid. All of the judges will pick their favorites from the videos at the end and winners will be announced.

Didn't read the above? Here's the lowdown!

What is The Cover Kid Event? It's the one time during the year where judges pick the children who will appear on the pages and the covers of Baton Rouge Parents Magazine.

How long have you been holding the event? For over 20 years! The magazine has been a staple for parents for over 30 years.

Is there a fee? Yes, there is a fee to participate. You will see it when you register!

What makes a Cover Kid? Cover Kids are ages 2-17. All children are invited to participate, regardless of shape, size, ethnicity, or ability.

How is a Cover Kid selected? There isn't a secret to being chosen. The best advice we can give? Let your children be themselves. They're all adorable and we know they have great personalities! Let them show that to the judges through the quick interview.

What should my child wear? Whatever he or she wants! Batman costume? Yes. Elsa and Anna dress? Absolutely. If they are comfortable in it, let them wear it! We want them to feel their best and if that's their go-to outfit, we're here for it. Basically, there's no dress code.

When is the event? Usually, The Cover Kid Event is one day out of the year. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has caused us to change up things. However, now you can participate virtually. We will have the virtual event on Saturday, August 8 from 2-4 p.m.

Okay, sounds great. Now what really happens during the event? Since this is the virtual event, you and your child will meet in our Zoom meeting room to learn about our partners and talk with the judges. Basically, this is just to help your child get comfortable with talking to everyone through Zoom. When it is time, your child will meet with the judges and have a quick chat. Your child will find out by the end of day through email if he or she has a callback.

What happens if they get a callback? You will take your callback and your child will make a video about why he or she wants to be a Cover Kid. Mom, you can help on this part! You will then submit the video to us. We will get the videos to the judges and they will do their final picks.

And if they don't? This unfortunately happens. We really mean it when we say that we want all of the children to make it. However, don't let this get you down. There's always next year. Maybe your child wasn't feeling it during the interview. It doesn't change the fact that he or she is awesome and still as adorable as can be.

Still didn't read any of this? Just register and we'll see you on Zoom!
