In this 3-hour workshop, you will learn how to teach students skills necessary for thinking critically about public policy using materials from the Council on Economic Education’s Fiscal Responsibility Curriculum. The lessons focus on government institutions like the Federal Reserve, programs like Social Security, and events such as the Panic of 1893. Students become informed citizens as they consider the tradeoffs involved in setting public policy. They learn to articulate their own views by evaluating primary and secondary sources, engaging in group activities, discussions, and by writing brief essays. All participants will receive a complementary copy of workshop materials and lessons.WHO’S IT FOR?Lessons are designed for high school teachers but can be scaled up (or down) to almost any grade level. Those who teach social studies, U.S. history, rhetoric, economics, and personal finance will find this workshop most valuable.
