Tools for Teens: Stress Management and Emotional Resilience

About this course:
This course teaches stress management and emotional resilience skills using an evidence-based curriculum of mindfulness and self-compassion. It is an adaption of Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC), and fully supported by Kristin Neff and Chris Germer, who developed MSC. This course is designed to reduce stress and increase a sense of feeling relaxed, happier, in control, and connection to others. Research indicates that this course may aid in reducing depression and anxiety in teens and may positively impact academic performance. Through practices and exercises developed just for teens, students have the opportunity to learn how to navigate the emotional ups and downs of life with greater ease. This class is designed for teens, ages 14 - 18.
This course helps teens:
· Calm the inner critic (self-kindness vs. self-judgment)
· Understand “I am not alone” (common humanity vs. isolation)
· Learn Strategies for handling moments of struggle (mindfulness vs. over-identification)

An Important Note to Parents and Guardians
We understand that parents are eager to help their children build skills for well-being and success. This course is only useful for teens if they are 100% on board with participating. Thus, before enrolling a participant, we strongly encourage parents to talk with teens to ensure they have read the course description and truly want to participate.
Additionally, we are unable to welcome teenagers who are not in high school. We apologize for this limitation; however, we have learned that all participants feel more comfortable and benefit the most when they are in the same age bracket.
Course Fees and Information
Fees for this workshop are based on a sliding scale honor system. We ask people to be mindful and compassionate when selecting a price. CCFW does not generate revenue from our events; revenue, minus minimal administration costs, goes directly to the instructors.
$345 Supporting: Help make compassion courses accessible to others in our community with limited financial means. This fee covers the cost of the course and allows CCFW to offer subsidized fees.
$295 Sustaining: This fee covers the actual cost of the course. Please select this price if you are able to pay the full cost of the course.
$245 Community: This is a reduced fee to help make the course accessible to those with limited financial resources. This fee does not cover the full cost of the course and is subsidized by people paying at the Supporting Level.

About the Facilitators:
Blair Carleton is a lifelong teacher. She is a Mindfulness Coach, Recovery Coach trained through the State of Washington and the Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery, and an instructor of Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC), as well as the MSC curriculum for teens, Making Friends with Yourself: A Mindful Self-Compassion Program for Teens and Young Adults. Her focus is on helping adults, young adults and teens cope with difficult emotions and self-judgment by building strong emotional resources, skills, and capacities that increase self-love and acceptance in any situation. Blair received her B.A. from Yale University. In 2010, she studied Shame Resilience with Brené Brown, just as Brown’s TED Talk on vulnerability and shame rocketed her into the mainstream. Blair went on to teach Shame Resilience as a faculty member of Recovery Café’s School of Recovery. Trained by the founders of Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC), Dr. Neff and Dr. Chris Germer, a clinical instructor and psychologist at Harvard Medical School, Blair received her MSC Teacher Certificate through University of California San Diego’s Center for Mindful Self-Compassion.
Kim Armstrong is Co-Founder and Executive Director of Space Between. She has been practicing yoga for almost 20 years. She subsequently added a meditation and mindfulness practice and believes in the power of these tools. She has a Masters in Psychology for children and adolescents, is a certified yoga teacher, and has trained with Mindful Schools, Next Generation Yoga for kids, Connection Coalition for trauma-informed yoga, The Center for Adolescent Studies, and more.
Previously, Kim worked with K-12 teachers, kids, and schools, focusing on developing sustainable communities, as a co-founder and co-director of Washington Green Schools. She has also worked with diverse populations in various places in the world to implement strategic and organizational change as the Director of Learning for Click2learn, and as a consultant for Andersen Consulting and Arthur D. Little. Kim holds a BA from Vanderbilt University, an MBA from New York University, and an MA in Psychology from the University of Washington
