The Mary S. Harrell Black Heritage Museum is proud to kick off the 30th Annual Black Heritage Festival weekend 2022, with a special performance of the George Stevens Jr, one-man-show, THURGOOD, an exciting, multi-media experience produced by, and starring Volusia's own Larry Murphy. Join us at 6 P.M. for wine and craft beer social hour, with delicious skewers at the beautiful, waterfront Brannon Center. Theatrical seating and the artful design of the Brannon makes every seat in the house fantastic for viewing. This will be a special night, celebrating the extraordinary achievements of an extraordinary American.
Thurgood Marshall was born in 1908 in Maryland, and was the first African American appointed to the United States Supreme Court. After being rejected by the University of Maryland College of Law on the basis of race, Marshall graduated valedictorian of his Law class at Howard University in 1933. His intellect, determination and fortitude stand today as a beacon of hope for dreamers and visionaries everywhere. Thus, Justice Marshall's life story is fitting to launch not only the 30th Annual Black Heritage Festival, but the first event of The Bridge Builders Series, a collaboration between the Mary S. Harrell Black Heritage Museum, and The Reel Film Foundation, producer of New Smyrna's International Film Festival, The Reel Deal Film Festival. The evening will be hosted by Southern Stone Communication's News Director, the one and only Trei Johnson, with perhaps a surprise guest or two. This evening is not to be missed!
