IStructE UAE Regional Group Committee is inviting you to a talk (hybrid) by Calum Perey, Principal Structural Engineer, Cundall on the topic “The Storm Coaster - Parametrically modelling a world record breaking roller coaster”.
The Storm is a first-of-its-kind indoor rollercoaster at Dubai Hills Mall by Emaar. Standing 50 meters tall, with a 670-metre track wrapping its way through the building, the rollercoaster pushes the boundary of all aspects of design. The Storm redefines what is possible for an indoor rollercoaster, containing multiple inversions and a world's first vertical magnetic propulsion system. Digital engineering was paramount to the success of this project, allowing the optimization of all aspects of design.
In a twist on the usual architect-led design approach, the building was majorly engineering led. Both the primary structure and the track itself are interconnected, requiring a level of precision not seen in regular construction. Rotating on all axis within the three-dimensional space of the building the track is extremely complex geometrically and was the defining element in the form and space planning of the building.
This is a hybrid event that will be held at Heriot Watt University, Dubai with streaming on Zoom and Youtube.
The event will be followed by a networking session giving an opportunity to meet other professionals from the industry including IStructE committee members who will be glad to answer any questions you have. Refreshments will be provided.
