"THE LEAPING BLAZE OF CHARITY": Bernard of Clairvaux as Spiritual Guide

Friday, August 12 - Sunday, August 14, 2022

In Dante's Paradise his final steps toward a vision of the Holy Trinity are guided by the twelfth-century Cistercian abbot Bernard of Clairvaux (d. 1153). Dante assures us that Bernard is a proper and trained guide because he has "tasted Heaven's peace" for himself. Bernard has not only had a mystical experience of the Holy Trinity but he wrote his On Loving God in order to guide others. This retreat will examine the thought Bernard on mystical union and how he can be a guide for us today.

The Rev. Greg Peters is an oblate of Valyermo, an Associate Professor of Medieval and Spiritual Theology at Biola University, La Mirada, CA and the Servants of Christ Research Professor of Monastic Studies and Ascetical Theology at Nashotah House Theological Seminary in Wisconsin. As an Anglican priest, he serves as Rector of the Anglican Church of the Epiphany, also in La Mirada. He is the author of Reforming the Monastery: Protestant Theologies of the Religious Life, The Story of Monasticism: Retrieving an Ancient Tradition for Contemporary Spirituality, and The Monkhood of All Believers: The Monastic Foundation of Christian Spirituality.
