CAHIIM

The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) strives to provide the public with effective and consistent quality monitoring of health informatics and health information management (HIM) programs through maintenance of accreditation processes. CAHIIM is the globally recognized and trusted accreditation organization for Health Informatics and Health Information Management education programs to ensure the development of a workforce that meets the challenge of an information-intensive environment and its impact on global health. CAHIIM, a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization accredits associate and baccalaureate degree programs in health information management, and masters’ degree programs in the health informatics and health information management professions in the United States and Puerto Rico. When a program is accredited by CAHIIM, it means that it has voluntarily undergone a rigorous review process and has been determined to meet or exceed the Standards set by the Board of Directors.

Dr. Philipia Hillman
Founder, The October Group

Dr. Philipia Hillman is the founder of The October Group a small consultancy in Washington, DC. The firm focuses on helping clients harvest the results they desire. She believes in a strength-based approach. This approach encourages individuals and organizations to identify and acknowledge what is good and to use that to ignite the transformation they want to see. Dr. Hillman’s experiences include driving a communication strategy with the National Science Foundation (NSF), a renewal strategy with the Association of Contextual Behavioral Scientists, supporting a safety strategy with CONSOL Energy, transforming culture with the National Weather Service (NWS), and a design strategy with the District Alliance of Safe Housing (DASH). Dr. Hillman’s current portfolio centers around work with associations, small businesses and executive partnering with boutique consulting firms.

Dr. Joan Straumanis
Management Consultant for Non-Profits; Board Member, CAHIIM; West Coast Regional Development Officer, Antioch College (Ohio)

Joan Straumanis provides consultant services in administration, strategic planning, and leadership development for non-profits. She has been a high school teacher, college professor, dean at three colleges and president of two, as well as a program director at two Federal agencies: the U.S. Department of Education and the National Science Foundation where she managed basic research in neuroscience and learning. She has served on five accreditation boards in the health sciences, including CAHIIM. Currently she is the West Coast Development Officer for Antioch College in Ohio, where she was president in the early 2000s.

Ryan H. Sandefer
Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor in the Department of Health Informatics and Information Management at the College of St. Scholastica

Ryan Sandefer, PhD is the Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs at the College of St. Scholastica. He is also an associate professor in the Department of Health Informatics and Information Management where he teaches research methods and data analytics. He is responsible for coordinating and integrating planning efforts around new and expanding non-traditional programs. Through the use of data analytics and metrics, Dr. Sandefer deepens the college’s culture of evidence and the use of data for strategic decision making. He ensures the alignment of initiatives with the College’s mission and values, especially the challenge of creating community among online and extended site learners. Dr. Sandefer has a master’s degree in political science from the University of Wyoming and completed his PhD in health informatics from the University of Minnesota. Currently, Dr. Sandefer served as the chair of the AHIMA Council for Excellence in Education, a presenter for the AHIMA data analytics workshops, and an instructor for the Certified Health Data Analytics exam prep workshops. Dr. Sandefer has extensive experience working with large healthcare datasets and analytic procedures. Dr. Sandefer co-edited the textbook Data Analytics in Healthcare Research: Tools and Strategies through AHIMA press, which offers a unique opportunity to experience big data from a hands-on perspective using open source tools and data.
