The Evolution of Science Fiction Webinar Series
Module Four: The Rise of Science and Modernity (1500-1750)

Thomas Lombardo
Director, Center for Future Consciousness

Beginning with the European “Age of Exploration,” in this new webinar we discuss, as critical factors affecting the emergence of modern science fiction, the expanding vistas on nature and humanity, and the opening of the heavens and human consciousness in the modern era. How did the Scientific Revolution transform our understanding of nature, ourselves, and the heavens above? How did scientific and religious visions of reality of the period both clash and harmonize in thinking out the possibilities of the future, fantastic new discoveries, and extraordinary adventures into the unknown? Other key topics examined include: Bruno, Fontenelle, and Huygens‘ seminal speculations on alien worlds and alien life and intelligence; Leibniz’s vision of cosmic evolution; Kepler’s journey to the moon, as well as other similar lunar adventures of the time; and the earliest modern utopias--reflecting social, religious, and scientific-technological perspectives--including Campenella’s City of the Sun and Bacon’s The New Atlantis.
