Please join The Depression & Anxiety Specialty Clinic of Chicago (DASC) in welcoming Dr. Katherine Schaefer-Berg, Ms. Kerry Curran LCSW, and Mrs. Chelsea Ragsdale LCSW, as they present “The Essentials of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)” DBT is a cognitive-behavioral treatment that was originally developed to treat chronically suicidal individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Research has since shown that it is effective in treating a wide range of other disorders such as substance dependence, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and eating disorders.

This highly interactive workshop will provide participants with a thorough introduction to DBT conceptualization and techniques. Specifically, this workshop will present core DBT concepts, components of the DBT model of therapy, setting the structure for DBT sessions, as well as provide current research and literature on DBT. Additionally, this training will include experiential learning of the DBT skills of mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance. There will be opportunities to practice key components of DBT, such as balancing acceptance and change and engaging in chain analyses. Participants will also have the opportunity to strengthen their skills in working with clients who engage in self-harm, experience suicidal ideation, or become emotionally-dysregulated during session. This workshop aims to make the complex concepts of DBT accessible and ready to be implemented in participants' practices. Furthermore, this workshop serves as a prerequisite-and is designed to prepare attendees for-more advanced DBT workshops offered by DASC-Chicago and Northwestern University.

The Depression and Anxiety Specialty Clinic of Chicago was founded in 2005 after it became apparent that there was a significant shortage of quality Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) available in Chicago. Many people with treatable disorders, such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Social Anxiety and Major Depressive Disorder were suffering needlessly because they could not access quality care. It has been the mission of DASC to address this shortage by providing services to those suffering and also offering training opportunities to other professionals to increase the availability of CBT. DASC has a highly-trained clinical staff specializing in using and teaching CBT.
