Couples distress is a public health issue and many of the clients who seek counseling present with relationship issues. Additionally, couples counseling is a challenging process even for the experienced therapist. This workshop will present strategies for effective early engagement with couples to prevent drop out and describe how to avoid typical mistakes that both novice and experienced couples counselors make. The presenter will also discuss: Reasons for contemporary couple’s distress, the clinical position of a couple’s counselor, early intervention tools essential tools, sequencing of the process. 
 
 
Learning Objectives
  • The workshop attendees will learn at least 3 essential tools for early engagement with couples to prevent drop out
  •  The presenter will describe 5 reasons for contemporary couples distress that couples therapists can convey to their clients 
  • The attendees will hear a description of typical mistakes in couples therapy
