Mary Wollstonecraft was the foremother of feminism, an educational pioneer and an early human rights champion. Her legacy has increasing resonance in these times of political turbulence. She demanded political inclusion in the face of a powerful backlash, and she paid the price. Distinguished by her courage and her intellect, she was, in her own words, "the first of a new genus." 

But that's not all. Mary Wollstonecraft was a traveller, indeed she was the world's first - and only - treasure-hunting single mum philosopher on the high seas. Come and join us on a treasure-seeking evening of travel with her, and Bee Rowlatt, who retraced her notorious Scandinavian journey in In Search of Mary.

Bee Rowlatt is a writer and journalist whose latest book In Search of Mary is inspired by the life of Mary Wollstonecraft. It won the UK’s “Real Life Reads” 2016 and made the Independent’s Best Biographies list. Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen called it “terrific – quite unlike anything I’ve read before.” Click here for her latest work. Bee also co-wrote the best-selling Talking about Jane Austen in Baghdad and is one of the writers in Virago’s Fifty Shades of Feminism. Recent speaking appearances include Jaipur Litfest where she was declared VOGUE India’s “latest girl crush and undeniable star of the show.” Also 5x15, Hay Festivals, and British Council literary events in Iraq, Norway, India, Mexico, Russia and Palestine. Bee is chair of Mary on the Green, the campaign to memorialise Mary Wollstonecraft. She has four kids and currently lives in New Delhi.
