Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to be presenting a round-up of the construction and completion of the unique major tunnelling project project that transfers all of Abu Dhabi's sewage to works at Al Wathba.

Venue in Abu Dhabi on 2nd May is New York University starting at 7p.m. and in Dubai on 9th is AUD also at 7p.m.

Note:

STEP Background

In the mid 2000’s, the residential and commercial sectors in the metropolitan areas of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi witnessed significant growth. In particular, Abu Dhabi Island (ADI) and Abu Dhabi Mainland (ADM) were being developed on an aggressive timescale. Given its growing international image and projected growth, the need for an efficient and reliable wastewater management system was deemed vital to the Emirate.

In response, ADSSC prepared of a sewerage system Master Plan in 2006 and used this, along with other historical data sources, to develop a series of planned investments. The resulting Capital Investment Programme (CIP) comprised four major components:

* Continued implementation of a series of ongoing projects.

* Implementation of a Tactical Investment Plan (TIP) under which defined projects would be actively promoted.

* Implementation of a Strategic Investment Plan (SIP) under which future long-term concepts would be developed (re-branded as the Strategic Tunnel Enhancement Programme (STEP)).

* Continued servicing named developments where the assets were provided by the developers.

STEP was intended to address a mixture of strategic and conceptual needs and evolved to become a world-class solution to relieve the hydraulic burden on the existing sewerage network and one of the deepest gravity sewer tunnels in the world. It conveys all the wastewater of ADI and a significant portion of flows from ADM via gravity to a single pump station at the end of the deep tunnel sewer, at Al Wathba.

The components of the system that have been constructed, or are currently being completed, consist of the following:

* A 41 km long deep tunnel sewer ranging in diameters of 4.0m and 5.5m and 30-85m deep;

* 45 km of link sewers that connect the existing sewerage system to the new deep tunnel sewer;

* One large and deep pumping station (PS-01) at the downstream end of the deep tunnel sewer, which is designed to accommodate an average wastewater flow of 1.9 million m3/day by 2030 and lift the sewage into the Independent Sewerage Treatment Plants (ISTP’s) at Al Wathba;

* Two regional Odour Control Facilities (FOCS) that are part of the overall odour control strategy for the integrated STEP system.

The above works will enable the future elimination of 35 existing sewage pumping stations. This system is anticipated to be operational in late 2017.
