SYSTEMS ENGINEERING FOR THE MARS SAMPLE RETURN MISSION
MYLES JOHNSON,
SYSTEMS ENGINEERING GRADUATE, LOCKHEED MARTIN UK
PROGRAMME INTRO
Mars Sample Return was formed as a collaboration mission between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to return a sample of the Martian surface to Earth by 2030, providing significant scientific benefits; without the inherent risks or costs of a human-assisted mission.
ESA commissioned the Mars Sample Return Architecture Study (MSRAS) from late 2017 to early 2018 as part of their General Studies Program (GSP) to gather feasible mission scenarios for the Mars Sample Return Orbiter (MSRO) system, due for launch in the late-2020s. Deimos Spain, Lockheed Martin UK and MDA Canada were contracted during the MSRAS to provide mission analysis, spacecraft systems engineering and payload design, respectively.
The aim of this lecture is to introduce the topic of sample return missions and Mars Sample Return (MSR), describe the systems engineering undertaken within the Mars Sample Return Architecture Study (MSRAS), and outline the key findings of the MSRAS put forward for formal review.

NOTE FOR REGISTRATION
Thanks for registering your attendance via our Eventzilla site.
We have streamlined our event registration process by introducing online booking platform as an alternative to email and telephone registeration for our lectures/events, as well as developing a way of tracking numbers on any lectures/events that may be oversubscribed.
When you book, please select the relevant ticket option, and the number of tickets you would like. The booking confirmation will be automatically emailed to you, and that there is currently no option for us to admit last minute registration at the door.
The application asks for both registration and attendee details - even if there is only one person on the booking, you must fill in all fields. If you are reserving more than one ticket please ensure you enter the name of all attendees so they are reflected on the attendee list.
If there is any problem incurred during the registration process, or if there's anything we can improve on this tool, please contact the Branch Secretary –
