British Canoeing

SUP Provider Moderation

Please arrive promptly for a 9am start, this is a busy day maximising the use of water time, so it is expected that we will get off the water at approx. 4:30/ 5pm and debriefs and action planning etc will take place after this time.

As part of the day, British Canoeing would like you to deliver an element of the SUP DSM. Using the learning outcomes outlined in the link below, produce a learning programme that will enable candidates to meet all of these outcomes. On the day of the orientation you will be asked to deliver an element of your learning programme to the rest of the group.

Your Session

  • We are a group of 10 - 12 and the other aspirant providers will be your group.
  • Each session will be approximately 15 mins long and while we appreciate that many of the subject areas would be delivered over a much longer time period, we are really interested in how you put across the key learning points from that subject area.
  • The expectation regarding demonstrations is that they are carried out by the provider as they would be on an actual course.
  • Just a reminder that this is a very practical course and you will be spending a reasonable amount of time on as well as in the water.

Subject Areas

  • Current SUP developments in the U.K. and the core organisations and stake holders
  • Equipment - SUP design and development, paddles, leashes and Buoyancy Aids
  • Getting participants afloat, launching/landing different platforms safety brief and boundaries
  • Forward paddling and adaptation for different boards/disciplines
  • Effective turns - static and on the move
  • Assisting tired paddlers both in the water and on their boards
  • Unconscious casualty rescue
  • Developmental games and activities to further participants skill levels
