Additional COVID Requirements:

Minnesota Roller Derby continues to take precautions to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and other viral illnesses at our practices and events by temporarily instating the following requirements. Please help keep everyone safe and healthy!
-
Skaters cannot attend practice within 24 hours of the onset of cold-like symptoms regardless of negative COVID-19 test. If symptoms linger but are beginning to clear up, skaters may attend with a mask over their nose at mouth at all times (other than while drinking water). Trainers reserve the right to require skaters to wear a mask if they observe a skater with symptoms.
-
Skaters who have been a close contact (spending prolonged time unmasked near) to someone diagnosed with COVID-19 should also not attend practice for 5 days.
-
Skaters who are diagnosed with COVID-19 need to communicate this to the Windchill Managers and our Safety Manager, Class Warfarin, for potential contact tracing purposes, and may not attend practices until at least day 10 after their first positive test.
-
Skaters and Officials participating in an unmasked travel derby game should mask one week prior and one week after the game while at MNRD practice. Masks should be over their nose at mouth at all times (other than while drinking water).

Practice Details:
-
The Summer Intensive Term runs from June through August (potentially September).
-
Practices are Sundays from 6:15-8:15 pm and split into 3 distinct contact levels (non-contact, beginning contact, and full contact). You may arrive as early as 6pm to begin getting settled. Skaters will practice in groups of those with similar skating abilities/contact level preferences (very much like in the past for those of you returning).
-
Practices are also Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30-9:30pm with the entire Windchill team as one group on one track. These practices will be all non-contact and work on doing fundamental skating and strategy building, working toward more speed and intensity. The travel team practices will be held on the other track during that time.
-
It is not required to attend all practice days to participate. There are no attendance requirements.
-
Practices are held in the Roy Wilkins Auditorium or The River Center Ex Halls located in downtown St Paul. If neither the Roy nor River Center have space available on a given practice day, no skating practice will be scheduled for that day. There may be non-skating activities scheduled instead, or the practice may be canceled. Schedules will be sent out monthly as we reserve space, and communicated again weekly to remind skaters of any changes or exact locations.
-
Skaters need to bring all their own gear, mask (in case), a water bottle, athletic shoes, and wear athletic clothing. Water fountains are available.
Typical Skating Practice Schedule:
-
You are encouraged to arrive up to 15 minutes early to do off skates dynamic stretching, gear up, and begin free-skating. We understand this is not possible for all skaters and arriving on time or a little late is not a big deal.
-
(10 min) Gear up, free skate time, dynamic stretching
-
(10 min) Announcements, daily plan, questions
-
(70 min) break into assigned groups by skill level for skating practice directed by trainers.
-
(30 min) Gear down, off skates workout, whole group stretching, cheer!
Recreational League cost:
-
$80 + processing fees to be paid during sign up.
-
What does this money do? Roller derby has a myriad of costs associated with practice and play. Practice space, venue insurance, safety/emergency equipment and personnel, travel and bout expenses, are some of the larger costs. Small stuff like duct tape and cones to weave around add up, too. Minnesota Roller Derby is skater owned and operated. We all pay in money, time, and contribute our skills to make this awesome sport run!
-
If the costs associated with any of the fees are prohibitive towards your participation, please email Windchill@mnrollerderby.com and a Windchill Manager will do their best to work with you before signing up.
Additional cost:
-
WFTDA Insurance: Womans Flat Track Derby Association insurance is a secondary insurance you are required to have to participate in our recreational league program. You must have active WFTDA insurance prior to participation in the first practice to skate with the recreational league. WFTDA insurance costs $75.00 and is active for one year from the date of purchase.
-
If possible, please purchase this prior to the first day of practice to maximize your skate time. The WFTDA website has a wonderful guide on how to do so. Here is how to find it:
-
Go to the WFTDA website https://wftda.ps.membersuite.com/
-
This is a full set of instructions on how to create an account and purchase WFTDA insurance.
-
You will need to email us ahead of time or be able to show us the confirmation email on the first scheduled practice day. You will not be able to skate until we have verified your purchase of WFTDA insurance.
-
If you would like help with this on the first day of practice, please have your card payment method available.
-
If the costs associated with any of the fees are prohibitive towards your participation, please email Windchill@mnrollerderby.com and a Windchill Manager will do their best to work with you before signing up. Please do not wait to make this request on the first day of practice as we will not be able to accommodate you at that time.
- Please also keep in mind that roller derby is a sport with an inherent risk of injury. We urge all participants to think critically about their financial and life situation should an injury occur, including your primary insurance coverage/co-payments, ability to care for your dependents, and potential effects on employment or school. We strive to make this sport as inclusive and safe as possible to limit these potential outside consequences. This is not meant to deter you, but to be real.
