Structural Engineering and Collapsed Structure Response Training II

This is based on the USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) Training we provide to Fire Departments and Search and Rescue at "Responder Level."

This is not a physically intensive Search and Rescue course but requires basic fitness for the practical portions as well as a "first on scene understanding" of how and why structural collapse may happen and what to do if you are the first on scene - even before emergency services and disaster responders arrive.

This course requires some pre-study and distance elearning

It also teaches inclusion into the Incident Command system and rescue response at Level II. This may be unusual, but on occasion - engineering and construction companies have a duty of care and an obligation to respond to their own emergencies and sometimes they have heavy equipment on scene that the emergency services do not have or has not arrived yet.

Examples of such needs are:

  • New builds collapse before completed
  • Trench collapse during excavation
  • partial collapse during major renovation
  • Equipment, (crane) scaffolding or other failure
  • Major storms or disasters during construction
  • Environmental causes such as sinkholes or overweight

In any case there are some first on scene considerations for safety and procedure such as setting a safety officer, ensuring the safe evacuation of workers, communicating the incident, 'surface rescue' of injured and affected casualties at the site and working with responding agencies.

Other course content includes:

  • Basic Structural Engineering Systems
  • Understanding mechanisms of failure
  • Causes of collapse and potential collapse
  • Communicating markings for rescuers and responders
  • Site assessments, Reconnaissance, Utilities and Rescue
  • The use of hand tools (like levers) and some heavier tools
  • The search and rescue system for construction workers
  • Immediate medical and health care considerations
  • The use of a longboard and carriage of casualties
  • Cordons and zoning off work and rescue areas
  • And Much More! ...
