Two day pre-fest crooked spoon carving workshop with Peter Follansbee

Peter Follansbee spoons are characterised by their crank and beautiful shape which follow the natural curves found in the tree. They are also immediately recognisable by their chip carved handles. If you've ever held and served up a home cooked treat with a Follansbee spoon, you'll know how good it works and feels.

During this two day workshop you will be guided towards making your own Follansbee spoon by one of the most knowledgeable and experienced carvers on the planet . You will be shown how to select, rive and carve naturally bent wood into beautiful spoons using just an axe, the ever versatile sloyd knife and hook knife.

This workshop will go deep into the spoon carving process, allowing you to develop new skills and refine any you may already have. There will be a focus on design, form, applying techniques to specific parts of the spoon, and an introduction to handle decoration. Peter will teach what it is that makes a great spoon, and how to achieve it yourself.

Peter is also a fantastic story teller, so be prepared for lots of carving, smiles and laughs along the way!

You should plan to bring a carving axe, hook tool, and sloyd knife (although we can provide these if needed).

Both days will run from 10am - 4pm.

For people aged 16 and over.

This workshop does not include entry into Spoon Jam on 3 & 4 November. Pre-fest session ticket holders will be given first dibs on Spoon Jam tickets. We will contact pre-fest ticket holders with an email and booking link three days before Spoon Jam tickets open to everyone else.

As ticket sales from pre-jam workshops contribute to the costs of getting these amazing folks to Australia, the pre-Jam tickets are non-refundable, but they can be transferred to another person if required.

Full cancellation and liability policy.

Peter Follansbee is a legend of the green woodworking world. He started green woodworking in 1978-80 primarily making ladderback chairs. He learned from John (now Jennie) Alexander, author of "Make a Chair from a Tree". By taking frequent workshops at Drew Langsner's Country Workshops, Peter learned about timber framing, basket-making, coopering, chairmaking (ladderbacks and Windsors) and learned spoon and bowl carving, from Jögge Sundqvist, Wille Sundqvist and Drew Langsner. Starting in 1989, he focused on learning to reproduce oak furniture of 17th-century New England and between 1994-2014 he worked in a living history museum in Plymouth Massachusetts making carved oak furniture. Peter is one of the organisers of Greenwood Fest, put on by Plymouth CRAFT in Plymouth, Massachusetts each June. He has written extensively, both on furniture history and how-to woodworking, including spoon carving. He has featured in numerous DVDs with Lie-Nielsen Toolworks, appearanced on Roy Underhill's The Woodwright's Shop, and has taught various woodworking classes in the US, UK and Sweden. blog - https://pfollansbee.wordpress.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/peterfollansbee/
