Anita has worked in early childhood education for most of her life and the last 20 years as a special education classroom teacher at The Jowonio School.  She holds a BM in Music Education and an MS in Early Childhood Special Education.  She is looking forward to presenting her first inservice. Carol Spartano, M.S. in Special Education, has been in the education field for over 40 years. For the past 39 years she has been happily employed at Jowonio School as a special education teacher and presently as a Clinical Support Teacher. She was lucky enough to have attended a 2 day conference back in 1999 with the creator of social stories, Carol Gray, back when she was first formalizing their use with students with ASD!

This inservice will focus on Social Stories (by Carol Gray), how they can be a tool in your bag when working with any child, but especially those with ASD and children with social or behavior challenges. Children who possess pro-social skills are shown to be more successful in school and are less likely to demonstrate inappropriate behaviors. This session will review general guidelines for creating social stories, as well as discussing examples of specific students and stories that have supported their social competence.  Presentation, discussion and taking time to create a social story will be used to illustrate this topic.
