Course introduction

Class will be taught by awarding winning photographer Carl Stoveland.  Mr. Stoveland has shown and sold his work in many galleries from Massachusetts to Florida and has been teaching photography for the past five years.  When not teaching Carl runs his own photo business in called Carl Stoveland Photography and is currently working on a year long portrait project called IAMLAKEWORTH.

This class will help you get to know your smartphone camera and some of the amazing things it can do.  We will learn techniques and also add applications that will help you take better photographs with you Smartphone.  In the end a good photograph is a good photograph no matter the camera used to take it so I will focus on what makes a great photograph including design and composition.  During each class we will look at the work of one master photographer and talk about that makes their work unique.

Meeting Days will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday from June 26th to July 7th.

Assumptions

Students taking the class will have a Smartphone either Apple or Samsung.

Students will have access to the app store on the phone so they can add 2 or 3  photo applications for use in the class.

Class 1 - Getting to know the Smartphone camera

Exploring the built in camera and editing applications.  The phone’s built in camera and editing tools are powerful and we will look at how get the most out of them.

Class 2 -  Applications to improve your photography

These fall into two categories.  The first are apps to help you take control of the camera and learn to understand its functions instead of letting the camera make all the decisions for you. 645 Pro is the application we will use for controlling the camera.

The second category is applications to edit your photos and make them as good as they can possibly be.  Snapseed is on application we will focus on for this.

During this class we will spend time editing some photos using snapseed.

Other optional apps we will discuss but are not required to add are slow shutter, my lightmeter, sky guide and true DoF-Pro.

Class 3 - What makes a good photograph?

By class three we will have taken some photos in class as well as had a couple of home assignments.  We will in this class talk about what makes a great photograph and for that matter painting or piece of art from a design point of view.

We will start in class critiques to highlight some of the things students are doing well and give them ideas for making better photos.
