Shawn Gomez, Eng.Sc.D
Biomedical Engineering Associate Professor UNC-NCSU Joint Dept of Biomedical Engineering

Dr. Shawn Gomez is an Associate Professor in the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at UNC-Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University and in the Department of Pharmacology at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is also part of the Comparative Medicine Institute at the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine. He received his BS and MS degrees in Aerospace Engineering Sciences from the University of Colorado at Boulder and his Doctorate of Engineering Sciences in Biomedical Engineering from Columbia University in New York City. Subsequent training in the field of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology were as a postdoctoral fellow at the Judith P. Sulzberger Columbia Genome Center and then at Institut Pasteur in Paris, France where he was a Florence Gould Scholar and Pasteur Foundation Fellow. Dr. Gomez's research focuses on bioinformatics and computational systems biology, with particular emphasis on understanding the architecture and dynamics of cell signaling in human disease. A significant portion of his work centers on the analysis and modeling of cell systems at multiple scales, using statistical and machine learning techniques as well as more classical modeling approaches, with major applications in cancer and infectious disease. Similarly, his group is actively involved in the development of novel, network-focused, computational algorithms, tools and models that complement these research efforts. Since 2017, he has been the Director of FastTraCS, a component of the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute (NCTraCS), which is funded through the NIH CTSA Program. Previously named 4D (for Drugs, Devices and Diagnostics Development), FastTraCS is an effort to build on, and significantly enhance, previous successes in translational research efforts at UNC-Chapel Hill and the broader NC healthcare system.
