This course is aimed at architects, urban designers and planners wishing to gain the intellectual, theoretical and practical knowledge and skills essential to understanding and shaping the future city. An overview of the design practices, methodologies and vision that responds to the current and future trend of the industry.
This lecture also explores the work and methodology of Killa Design with a particular focus on the studio’s quest and effort to generate design innovation in this fast emerging world. From the 3d printed office of the future, from the museum of the future of Dubai upto a low carbon 111-storey residential tower in Dubai.
The learning objectives for the lecture are (1) Identify, analyze and explore the projects vision, (2) Illustrate, understand and capture the culture of the region, (3) Identify the structural innovations that are timeless and environmentally sustainable and to (4) Understand responsible design and the impact it has on the life’s we touch every day.
About the Speakers:
BENJAMIN PIPER
Ben Piper is a Principal and Partner with Killa Design with 18 years of professional experience in architecture (11 years in UAE). He is an experienced leader with an excellent ability to lead multidisciplinary teams in the delivery of building projects. He has held senior roles in a variety of global practices including Gensler, Halcrow, Atkins, Perkins+Will and Killa Design in designing hotel, residential and mixed-use developments in the Middle East, India, China, US and the UK.
Projects completed or under construction include 56-story VIDA Marina Branded residences and Hotel for Emaar, Dubai; 45-story BLVD Heights Residential Tower for Emaar, Dubai; 52-story Creekside Residence for Emaar, Dubai; 35-story commercial office building for Barwa Bank, Qatar; 280 Key Diplomatic Quarter Hotel Serviced Residences for Marriot, Riyadh; 300 Key Acacia Residences for Emaar, Dubai; 62-story BLVD Address 5-star hotel and serviced apartment for Emaar, Dubai; 60-story Namaste hotel for Starwood, Mumbai; 10,000 seat occupancy IT Offices for ITC, Bangalore.
Ben holds several technology patents from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology based on his research into the field of computational design tools. As a LEED Accredited Professional Ben is deeply committed to sustainable design and has implemented numerous energy, water and waste saving principles into his LEED Platinum rated design work.
SHAUN KILLA
An extremely influential voice in the field of architecture with a passion for sustainable design, Shaun has been an award winning architect who has worked on some of the world’s most iconic structures. He worked with Atkins in Dubai from 1998 to 2014 where he won numerous high-rise commissions along with the design of the world’s first large-scale integration of wind turbines into a building, the Bahrain World Trade Centre.
In 2015, he set up his own architectural practice, Killa Design. Shaun’s strong commitment to bringing on young talent and holistic approach to design identifies with some of the company’s current signature projects which includes the award-winning design for the Museum of the Future, the Address Hotel, a low carbon 111-storey residential tower in Dubai and a W hotel in India. Killa Design recently handed over its first completed building – the Office of the Future and continues to drive design excellence in multiple design and supervisory roles that the firm is involved in.
