The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in conjunction with the Sex Offender Management Board (SOMB), is pleased to announce Sex Offender Registration and Sexually Violent Predator Training.  This class is offered free of charge, and is open to all personnel who work with or are involved in sex offender management and registration and/or sexually violent predator community notification training and meetings.  Parole and probation are also encouraged to attend.  This training will be offered many times throughout the state over the next year and a half, so you may wish to wait for a training class scheduled near you.

Date:  September 19, 2017, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Registration will start at 7:30 AM.  A one hour lunch will be on your own.

Hosted by:  the La Junta Police Department.  The class will be held at the La Junta PD training room (St. Pat's) located at 611 Raton Avenue.  It is 1 block east of the actual PD which is located at 601 Colorado Avenue.  We will be registering the first 25 students on a first come, first served basis.  Those that register after the first 25 students will be placed on a waiting list. Each student requesting to attend will need to complete their OWN registration. Please do not register anyone except yourself, as we will be sending e-mails to all attendees pre and post training. If you register for someone else, both registrations will be cancelled.

Class Details:  The morning session will include training developed by the CBI and will be a full four hours.  It will include sex offender basics, Colorado sex offender statute information, Messenger training and COSOR Module training.  The SOMB will end the day presenting training on:  National and state legislation regarding sexual offenders, statistics and characteristics of sexual offenders, sex offender management and containment in the community, how to conduct community notification, and changes to the Criterial and Protocol book.

Presenter:  The CBI and SOMB are proud to announce that through grant funding, this training will be conducted by Retired Detective Rick Schneider of the Denver Police Department.  Rick has over 31 years of law enforcement experience with 29 years at the Denver Police Department.  He spent the last 13 years of his career in the Sex Offender Unit with the Denver PD.  Rick brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the topic of sex offender registration.

It is recommended that for the first session, you have at least a rudimentary knowledge of Messenger and the Module.  As a reminder, this training is for criminal justice personnel only.

Course materials:  Materials are posted to the CJIS Portal website located at ccicportal.state.co.us.  If you wish to have copies of the PowerPoints printed to take notes on, you will need to print them yourself from CJIS Portal.  Copies of the PowerPoints will NOT be provided in class.

There are 4 different PowerPoints you will need for the class. On CJIS Portal, click on CJIS Documents, Sex Offender Registration, and Sex Offender Registration Training.  You will need the Statutes, Messenger, Module and Community Notification training PowerPoints.  They are all offered in 2 different versions (2 or 3 slides per page) so print whichever PowerPoint presentations best suit your needs.

Once you have completed the class, students will be directed to take a 10-20 question exam on the CJIS Portal website.  After the successful completion of the exam, the student will be issued a certificate of completion.

If you should have any questions regarding this training, please contact Kristie Mahler with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation Sex Offender Registry at kristie.mahler@state.co.us.
