2177 - Seminar Room, Queen Margaret University, Musselburgh, East Lothian, EH21 6UU, United Kingdom.
In this workshop, Daisy will run a serious game on “How to Fail Your Research Degree”. You will have the chance to play the game, and discuss how game-based learning can be effective in embedding research skills into practice.
Whether you are a member of staff supervising student research, or a Master's or doctoral student yourself, you will take away a better awareness of the risks and pitfalls that can affect a research degree, and the academic skills and activities required for success (or failure!). Serious Games offer a fun way to learn, and there is growing research into how games can be used in higher education (see, for example http://www.springer.com/gp/book/9783319191256) .
“How to Fail Your Research Degree” has been formally evaluated with very positive results, and it won the Best Serious Game Award at a conference in 2015.
This workshop relates to the current Enhancement Theme of Student Transitions, in terms of the transition from undergrad to postgrad (inc PhD). For further information on the game, go to http://www.gsa.ac.uk/research/research-centres/school-of-simulation-and-visualisation/research/current-projects/serious-games/ - better still, come along and experience the game in this light-hearted workshop.
