About the Event

Our Security Education Week events are designed for cybersecurity professionals currently employed at electric utilities in North America. Instructors and course topics reflect the specific needs of the electric sector.

We believe that a community of peers is critical to our mutual success in securing critical systems. To support that, Education Weeks include a variety of networking events designed to build relationships within the industry and strengthen the community of cybersecurity professionals in our sector.

Attendees of this event will:

  • Increase their industry-relevant technical security knowledge
  • Earn Continuing Professional Education credits
  • Expand their relationships with other security professionals working at utilities throughout North America.

The Knoxville Education Week will feature a single track focused on Real-time Defense. Course content includes:

Introduction to Security Assessments

In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of technical security assessments and become familiar with several common tools utilized for such work. Students will come away with the required knowledge to begin assessing their environments for security issues and an understanding of common techniques used by attackers.

Incident Detection and Threat Hunting

Students will learn techniques to detect and investigate potentially malicious activity using an open-source SIEM platform. In hands-on “purple-team” exercises, students will learn to detect and defend against techniques demonstrated in the Security Assessments course. This will include a review of logs and forensic examination of network traffic.

Incident Response Exercises

In a full-day of tabletop exercises, students will learn incident response fundamentals and develop skills to successfully address cyber incidents.  A variety of incident scenarios will be presented as response exercises.

Threat Intelligence and Information Sharing

This session will cover the fundamentals of threat intelligence and information sharing using the Anomali Threat Intelligence Platform as a learning tool. Students will learn how and where to obtain information on active threats, how to leverage this information to defend their systems, and how to engage in information sharing groups to both support and benefit from their broader community
