GUEST OF HONOUR - John Muggleton

MC - BRUCE COOK

John Muggleton played his junior rugby with Dundas ValleyMuggleton was initially graded as a fullback with Balmain, but moved to Parramatta in 1980 and the following year, jumped suddenly into first grade just as the Eels won their first premiership.

He played 120 games at second row or centre for Parramatta between 1980 and 1989 and 3 Kangaroo tests with the ‘Invincibles’, who won all 22 games in England & France.

He then had 5 years at North Sydney Bears as the assistant coach. John was a cross-code pioneer with his defensive coaching in rugby.

After this, Muggleton turned to coaching in rugby, and  straight away the forward thinking Rod MacQueen had him into the Wallaby set up where he lasted 10 years, winning a RWC, 5 Bledisloe’s and 2 Tri Nations.

He then went on to coaching stints with USA, Scarlets, Georgia (2011 RWC), Rebels, Gloucester, Western Sydney Rams, Toyota, Parramatta, and Penrith.

He has now teamed up with the Wildfires as their defensive coach, and if the players take anything away from his involvement it will ensure some serious brick walls in defence.

Not surprisingly he believes in the old adage, defence wins you Rugby World Cups.

Hawthorne Club

The Hawthorne Club, Newcastle. The Hawthorne Club is a philanthropic volunteer group whose purpose is to raise funds to invest in Hunter Rugby. We are unique in that we do not have teams or participate in competitions. Since its Foundatio??n in 1997, The Hawthorne Club has provided more than $900,000 in funds for the support of Rugby and its participants. In 2012, the Club introduced the Hawthorne Club Rugby Support Program. The program aims to increase Rugby activities for Juniors, increase Club support and further work with Australian Rugby Union. Each year the Club holds major events for its members and guests. These events combine fundraising activities with a line-up of international and national guest speakers
