The NYSDOH AIDS Institute’s Office of Drug User Health presents a one-day conference for multidisciplinary professionals, advocates, and clinicians (MDs/DOs/NPs/PAs), who interface with, deliver services to, or provide care for women of childbearing age in New York State. The conference will feature a keynote address by renowned physician and researcher, Dr. Mishka Terplan, on "Opioid Use Disorder: Caring for the Pregnant Patient, A Life Course Perspective".  The conference will also include a dialogue session with an expert panel about drug user health in NYS. There will be opportunities to network and collaborate with other attendees in the afternoon as the group considers how to overcome the presented challenges and recommend systemic improvements to increase access to and quality of health care for women who use drugs in NYS.

Authorized practitioners (MDs, DOs, NPs & PAs) can choose to participate in a free buprenorphine waiver eligibility training in the afternoon (Session 3) which will specifically inform those in OB/GYN practice settings. Under current regulations, authorized practitioners are required to obtain a ‘waiver’ to prescribe buprenorphine. Please contact us for further information.

Details on the buprenorphine waiver training:

The NYSDOH, AIDS Institute is sponsoring a Free Buprenorphine Waiver Training for obstetricians and gynecologists. Physicians, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists and Medical Residents are also welcome and highly encouraged to attend this training. In response to opioid overdose deaths in New York State, increased access to buprenorphine treatment for opioid overdose disorder is urgently needed, and OB/GYNs are paving the way to ensure women of childbearing age obtain access to this highly effective treatment.

Under current regulations, authorized practitioners (MDs, DOs, NPs & PAs) are required to obtain a ‘waiver’ to prescribe buprenorphine. To acquire this waiver, physicians are required to complete a standardized buprenorphine waiver 8-hour training. Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Physician Assistants (PAs) are required to complete the standardized buprenorphine waiver 8-hour training as well as an additional 16 hours of online training as established by CARA. The buprenorphine waiver 8-hour training is offered in a half-and-half format [3.5 hours of online training completed after 4.5 hours of the live training]. Upon completion of the required training, providers will meet the requirement of the DATA 2000 to apply for a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine for opioid-dependent patients. Please contact us for further information.
