IStructE Regional Group Committee is inviting you to a webinar by Declan McCaffrey BSc(Eng) MIStructE, on the topic “Renovation of Old Stone Buildings”.
The talk aims to demonstrate the viability of renovating old derelict stone buildings and houses. With adequate investigation, planning and careful selection of repair material the majority of derelict buildings can be restored and given a new lease of life.
The webinar will cover the fundamental principles to be applied when working with traditional materials such as Limestone, lime mortar, lime wash, timber floors, roofs and drainage.
Restoring a building is often more affordable than building an entirely new one. The speaker will demonstrate this by sharing a case study detailing how a 150 year old derelict cottage in Ireland was brought back to life and how minimum intervention was essential in delivering a sustainable, economical and successful project.
Renovating old buildings is also of Architectural importance. These buildings play an important role in creating a sense of community and character in a district. They are an example of a particular time and style of architecture that would otherwise be long forgotten.
