About the Event

IMPORTANT NOTE: OUR CURRICULUM IS DESIGNED FOR TOTAL NEWCOMERS TO PROGRAMMING!

This workshop is a free event for people who are underrepresented in tech (women, LGBTQ, military veterans, people of color, people with disabilities, etc.) to learn how to write code in the Ruby programming language and how to create web applications using the Ruby on Rails framework.

Over the course of the workshop, we will cover:

  • Why Ruby?
  • What is a web framework? And why Ruby on Rails?
  • What happens when a browser requests a dynamic web page?
  • Dividing up code responsibilities with the Model, View, Controller architecture.
  • Saving data in a database.

HTML and CSS will NOT be covered!

Friday (6:30pm - 9pm)

  • Check-in and dinner
  • Introductions
  • Software installation
  • Presentation: Intro to the Command Line

Saturday (9:30am - 5pm)

  • Q&A with TAs
  • More Rails concepts
  • Closing notes
  • Post-workshop celebration! (after 5pm)

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

All students will work through the curriculum on their own laptop. That means you get to take home all of your accomplishments for the weekend!

You'll want to make sure that the laptop you bring:

  • Has a working power cord.
  • Has an admin account that you can access (you'll need the admin password to install the software).
  • Is compatible with our curriculum.

If you're not sure if your computer will work, feel free to contact us using the email at the bottom of this page.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Anyone who has little to no prior coding experience. All professions (technical or not!) and walks of life are welcome. Retakes of this workshop are also welcome!

There is no age restriction, but if you're under 18 and would like to attend, please bring an adult.

Parents: If you cannot find a babysitter for that weekend, we can provide free onsite childcare. A huge thanks to thoughtbot for this opportunity!

WHAT IF I ALREADY KNOW SOME RAILS?

Experienced programmers should note that the class is geared to beginners. If you've completed the Hartl tutorial, you've gone well past what we'll cover.

Consider coming to Boston Ruby's monthly Project Night instead. There are many friendly Rubyists available to help you over configuration bumps and answer questions.
