Mary Gates is Principal Sanitarian for the Central Office of the Office of Primary Care and Health Systems Management of the New York State Department of Health. Her position is split between the Long Term Care Quality Bureau and the Bureau of ICF/IID Surveillance. Mary has been surveying with the ICF/IID Bureau since 2012, for Health and Life Safety Code compliance. She is certified by New York State as a Code Enforcement Office.

President and Director, Special Pathogens Laboratory

Janet E. Stout, PhD is the director of Special Pathogens Laboratory and research associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. A clinical and environmental microbiologist, she is recognized worldwide for more than 30 years of pioneering research in Legionella. The author of more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals, as well as textbook chapters on Legionella and Legionnaires’ disease.

Laura Morris MT (ASCP), CIC, is the education coordinator at Special Pathogens Laboratory. A certified infection control professional since 2009, Morris has 15 years of clinical microbiology experience and more than five years’ experience in clinical and environmental research in Legionella. An active member of the Three Rivers Pittsburgh Chapter of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (TRAPIC) and has served on the chapter’s board for directors or eight years.

Ursula Lauper is an environmental epidemiologist and applied social scientist, Ursula’s work has touched on a broad range of topics. For the past two years Ursula has been with the Bureau of Water Supply Protection at the New York State Department of Health, where she oversees research, evaluation, policy, and resource development efforts related to New York State’s regulation, Protection Against Legionella.

John T. Letson is vice president plant operations at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Experienced in organizational management, compliance, technical engineering and operations for infrastructure, construction, and renovations, Letson authored MSK’s Legionella monitoring, prevention and control policies, procedures and plans. He is a member of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine’s committee on Management of Legionella in Building Water Systems.

Mensah-English leads a research project exploring the impact of New York City’s first-in-the-nation cooling tower legislation on Legionnaires Disease incidence.
