Practical Agile

This course provides a concise understanding of the most popular agile-aligned frameworks and techniques that help teams to work in an agile way.

The most popular framework for working in an agile way is scrum, so we provide an overview of scrum followed by an activity where participants meet a user need by working together using the concepts we've discussed. The activity covers scrum ceremonies, roles and artefacts and how it all comes together to focus on delivery of value using a small incremental delivery approach.

In addition, we provide an overview of kanban and an activity that demonstrates how a kanban approach can deliver value and build high-performing agile teams by focusing on minimising waste and optimising flow by identifying bottlenecks.

User Centred Design (UCD) has had a big impact on how we identify and maintain focus on building the right thing. We cover the basics of UCD, including user research, hypothesis and prototyping, topped off with some activities that demonstrate the importance and power of UCD.

But the fun doesn't end there - we also cover story mapping and impact mapping.

Story mapping is great for visualising the scope of a service, release planning and identifying the work that the team needs to do.

Impact mapping starts with goals and produces a map that identifies what we should work on, the relative priority of the work and gives us a way to navigate the work to achieve our goals quickly. impact mapping works really well when the goals are set from business benefits.

Using the two techniques together allows teams to ensure that the service they deliver meets both user and business needs, and our challenges to participants in using these techniques demonstrate how quick and easy it can be to scope and gain a really good understanding of not only the problem but how you might go about solving it.
