Class Fee includes 25 lbs clay and ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING ELSE: glazes, firings, and use of all tools, supplies and studio equipment. Additional clay is available at $14 per 25lb bag of stoneware and $20 per 25lb bag of porcelain. Note: Intermediate and Advanced students have the option to recycle their own clay.
NOTE: Missed classes due to vacation or illness can be made up during open studio times or by special arrangement with instructors.
About the Class: Intermediate Pottery II for Adults is a 10-session intermediate-level clay class that's packed with learning new skills and techniques, all with the major goal of learning to think and produce as an ARTIST. Pottery II students work semi-independently in a series of broad assignment options which help them develop new insights into clay as an art form.
PREREQUISITES: Pottery I or permission of Instructors.

POTTERY II STUDENTS:
• may focus on either wheel or handbuilding, or both.
• with the instructors, set individual learning goals for their area(s) of interest.
• have the option to work in various stoneware and porcelain clay bodies.
• work to develop excellent craftsmanship and to demonstrate an awareness of the elements & principles of design in their clay work.
• learn/master advanced pottery construction techniques including: lids and sets, handles, altering, coloring clay bodies, using the wheel for handbuilding, etc.
• learn/master advanced surface design techniques including: underglazes on both raw and bisqued clay (color theory, painting, highlighting, washes, layering, etc.), resists (wax, paper, latex, tape), embossing, sgraffito, mishima, trailing, feathering, marbling, image transfer, monoprinting, lithography, airbrushing, atomizing, screenprinting, etc.
• research the techniques and work of contemporary potters through current publications, books, and internet resources
• participate in group discussion, analysis and critique
• participate in individual and/or group exhibits of their work
ADDITIONAL STUDIO TIME for pottery students:
Wednesdays 6 – 9 pm
Fridays 12:30 - 3:30 pm
Saturdays 9 am – Noon
And other times by arrangement
Instructors and/or Teaching Assistants are always in the studio to help you!
ABOUT THE STUDIO:
The Museum Pottery Studio is a well-equipped, safe workspace which includes:
- 12 wheels, 3 large electric kilns, 2 slab rollers, a pugmill for recycling clay, 2 extruders, and industrial air cleaners;
- All basic tools, materials, and supplies for all classes;
- A studio library which offers books, DVDs, magazines and publications.
- Extensive storage and shelving for each student with a designated shelf for her/his on-going work and personal supplies.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS:
Jeff & Jane Boswell have a long history with teaching, with clay, and with each other. They both have done graduate work in pottery and have enjoyed exhibiting and selling their work. The Boswells developed the Museum’s popular pottery program in 2010 and continue to oversee all classes which now include a talented team of Teaching Assistants..
