POTTERY I: INTRO to CLAY for Adults (21+)

Class Fee includes ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING: clay, glazes, firings, and use of all tools, supplies, and studio equipment. 

 

About This Class: 

Pottery I is a 10-week intro to pottery - it’s a fun, basic, sample-everything clay class in which students create handbuilt and wheel thrown stoneware pottery using the potter’s wheel, slab roller, extruders, templates, molds, and their bare hands!

Students learn:

  • basic handbuilding techniques using slabo, molds, templated, and extruded forms.
  • finish off the session by trying your hand at the potter's wheel!
  • to explore surface decoration on raw clay forms through: carving, appliqué, impressing & stamping.
  • to apply color to bisqued clay with oxides, stains and glazes.
  • to glaze pottery by dipping, pouring, and painting.
  • to discuss, analyze, and evaluate pottery through group discussion/critique, using an    understanding of craftsmanship and the elements and principles of design.

Note: Missed classes due to vacation or illness can be made up during open studio times by special arrangement with instructors.

 

Additional studio times for pottery students:

Wednesdays 6 – 9 pm

Fridays 12:30 – 3:30 pm

Saturdays, 9 am-12 pm

Other times by arrangement.

Instructors and/or Teaching Assistants are always in the studio to teach and help!

 

About the Studio:

The Museum Pottery Studio is a well-equipped, safe workspace which includes: 

  • 12 wheels, 3 large electric kilns, 2 slab rollers, a pugmill for recycling clay, 2 extruders, and industrial air cleaners; 
  • All basic tools, materials, and supplies for all classes; 
  • A studio library which offers books, DVDs, magazines and publications.
  • Extensive storage and shelving for each student with a designated shelf for her/his on-going work and personal supplies.

About the Instructors:

Penny Kliner, Tia Love, and Vicki Hibbert have a clay history spanning over 40 years.  They have been Teaching Assistants and are currently working in the Advanced Independent Studio.  Penny & Tia, with pottery coordinators Jeff & Jane Boswell, promise a fun creative learning experience for new pottery students.
