Class Description

Students will learn important portrait painting and drawing tips for beginner and advanced portrait painting students. Through fundamental traditional instruction and demonstrations, students will build the confidence they need to create beautiful portrait drawings or paintings. There will be demonstrations in pastel, charcoal, and oil painting. Students will learn fundamentals of portrait art including creating flesh tones, understanding three dimensional forms, and proportions.

 

Materials

Students should bring materials of their choice. Specific recommended materials lists can be requested from the instructor depending on the student's interests. For more information, contact the instructor.

 

About the Instructor 

James Werner has been teaching at the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette for 20 years and working as a fine artist doing portrait commissions, murals, and gallery works. His work is created in a tradition of realistic representation and he teaches traditional methods rooted in classical realism, while encouraging students to pursue creative styles that interest them. James attended the Florence Academy of Fine Art in Florence, Italy and graduated from Purdue University with a Masters of Fine Art and a BFA from The Amaerican Academy of Art in Chicago.
