Parents:
Continuing the transportation theme of the past three (3) years … we are piloting a once-per-week, 8 months long aviation program for serious homeschooled high schoolers with an interest in mechanical engineering, physics and electrical engineering. How groovy it will be when applying to college submitting an essay that the student participated in a group airplane build, constructed an engine, tested a plane, flew the plane and witnessed the FAA process of approving a plane for commercial flight.
This class will meet on Mondays from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. There will be two (2) holidays over Turkey Day and Christmas. There will be 20 hours of instruction per month - depending on holidays - in addition to other opportunities.
Over the 8 months, the students will build a $60,000 airplane and its corresponding engine - following the guidance of the instructors as they learn parts, tools and technique; they may also rehabilitate an airplane wing. (A benefactor has secured the supplies, materials, parts and sundries to make this class possible.) They will also have flying lessons initially in a Red Bird Flight Simulator and will be taken on flights over the course of the program. The students will be conspicuously evaluated for possible selection to receive a flight scholarship with the ultimate goal of getting a pilot license.
There will be an opportunity for students to turn airplane controls into computer inputs. They may also be presented with opportunities to assist with a Saturday drop-in class for select students from partnered charter/public schools and Boy Scouts.
The cost for this program is $1,600 per student for approximately 160 hours of instruction.
This class will be conducted in a hangar on an active airport. Given the intensity of the subject matter and instructional content, the number of registrants is significantly limited. Participants must be in high school, must have a sincere interest in aeronautics and aviation and must be able to focus and attend without the need for redirection.
Sincerely,
Tracée Edmondson
