PCI IW - Education Session

The Precast Continuing Education program is an excellent opportunity for professionals in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry to gain valuable knowledge and training on a variety of topics related to precast concrete. Lake Geneva Cruise Line - US Mailboat Tour, July12 at 10:00am

We are thrilled to invite you to join us for a complimentary tour at the upcoming PCI IW Precast Summer Summit on July 12th at 10:00am. This tour promises to be a truly unique and unforgettable experience, as we take you on a journey through one of the few remaining places in the country where mail is still delivered by boat.

For over 100 years, they have been delivering mail to around 75 homes on the shores of Lake Geneva, and we would like to invite you to come and witness this amazing feat firsthand. The boat, the Walworth, departs promptly at 10:00am every day, and our journey will take us on a 2 ½-hour cruise around the entire lake, showcasing its breathtaking scenery and fascinating history.

As we navigate between the piers on the shoreline, you will have the opportunity to see our agile and athletic Mailjumper in action, delivering mail by jumping off the moving boat. Our knowledgeable guide will provide you with an in-depth narration of the Lake Geneva area and its ties to Chicago, giving you a deeper understanding of the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of this incredible region.

Precast Prestressed Concrete Institute of Illinois and Wisconsin

The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) of Illinois and Wisconsin is a professional association that represents companies involved in the design, manufacture, and construction of precast and prestressed concrete products in the states of Illinois and Wisconsin. PCI IW serves as a resource for industry professionals, providing education, networking, and advocacy services. Its members include precast concrete producers, engineers, architects, contractors, educators, and students. The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute of Illinois and Wisconsin plays an important role in promoting the use of precast and prestressed concrete in construction and providing valuable resources and support to industry professionals in the region.

In March of 2006 Gunny Harboe began his own architecture firm specializing in historic preservation and sustainable design. Prior to that he spent 17 ½ years at McClier (and Austin/AECOM) where he was responsible for all of the firm’s projects involving preservation, restoration, or rehabilitation of older structures of historic or architectural significance. He is a registered architect having received his M. Arch. degree from MIT, which included study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Denmark. He also has a M.Sc. in Historic Preservation from Columbia University, and an A.B. in History from Brown University. In 1998 he completed the course in Architectural Conservation at ICCROM in Rome, Italy. Mr. Harboe has gained a national reputation for his award winning work on the Rookery Building and Reliance Buildings. Both these projects received national Honor Awards from the American Institute of Architects and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Mr. Harboe was named a “2001 Young Architect” by the National AIA, and in 2002, he was made a member of the GSA’s National Register of Peer Professionals. His work has been recognized with over two dozen other awards and in 2010 he was named a Chicagoan of the Year by Chicago Magazine. Mr. Harboe is very active in several professional organizations.He is a past member of the national board of the AIA, as a Regional Director from Illinois. He is also a Past President of AIA Chicago. His other volunteer activities include serving as current Vice President of the ICOMOS ISC on 20th Century Heritage, past Vice President of the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois; and past Vice President of DOCOMOMO-US, where he currently remains a board member. Mr. Harboe has given over 100 lectures all over the U.S. and a dozen different countries, and has published numerous articles about his work. In addition, he is an Adjunct Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology in the College of Architecture where he teaches studio courses in design and preservation. Recent projects include: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West, Robie House, Unity Temple and Beth Sholom Synagogue; Mies Van der Rohe’s Crown Hall; Louis Sullivan’s Carson Pirie Scott Store; Holabird and Roche’s Marquette Building; and Holabird and Root’s Chicago Board of Trade Building and Lafayette Building, all National Historic Landmarks.

Steve Goreham is a speaker, author, and researcher on environmental issues, energy, and public policy. He’s a frequently invited guest on radio and television as well as a free-lance writer. He is the Executive Director of the Climate Science Coalition of America (CSCA), a non-political association of scientists, engineers, and citizens dedicated to informing Americans about the realities of climate science and energy economics. CSCA is the US affiliate of the International Climate Science Coalition. Steve is the author of three books on sustainability, climate change and energy. His latest book, Outside the Green Box: Rethinking Sustainable Development, tells readers “what their green consultant didn’t tell them.” More than 100,000 copies of his books are now in print. Steve holds an MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois and an MBA from the University of Chicago. He has more than 30 years of experience at Fortune 100 and private companies in engineering and executive roles. In his last industry position, he was vice president and general manager of an engineering and manufacturing operation with 350 employees and annual sales of $300 million. Steve is a husband and father of three and resides in Illinois.
