Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is marked by persistent unwanted thoughts and repetitive behaviors that can result in significant suffering. OCD is a complex disorder that can manifest as contamination obsessions with cleaning/washing rituals, obsessions concerning responsibility for harm with checking rituals, unacceptable obsessive thoughts with mental rituals, or symmetry/exactness obsessions with ordering/arranging rituals. This workshop will explore empirically supported approaches for the conceptualization and treatment of OCD and disorders that often co-occur with OCD.
Learning Objectives:
- Explain proper measures in the assessment of OCD and common differential diagnostic concerns with OCD
- Introduce participants to the underlying theory and the empirical support for ERP
- Provide instruction in the basic techniques of ERP to treat OCD in adults, adolescents and children
- Provide guidelines for how and when to modify ERP techniques to tailor the therapy to the individual (developmental issues, co-morbid conditions)
- Allow participants to practice the techniques of ERP by creating an exposure hierarchy for a mock client
- Include case vignettes and discussion of when and how to implement ERP
