Taming Troubled Tummies - New Perspectives on Dysbiosis
Jill Dunn MHSc [CompMed], DipNatTher, Dip Herb Med
Jill has more than 26 years clinical naturopathic and herbal medicine practice, 18 years’ commercial experience in the research and development of dietary supplements. With 24 years of tutorial experience of herbal medicine and nutrition at naturopathic colleges, Jill is now the NZ representative for the NZ Federation of Naturopaths, reporting to the World Naturopathic Federation. Recently involved in a collaborative survey of the CAM professions in NZ, Jill is intent on the creation of a truly integrative health system that combines the strengths of both orthodox and complementary medicine for the benefit of New Zealanders. Jill will update us on the WNF and give some insight as to the status of naturopathy in New Zealand.
Sam McSorley PG DipHSc, BHSc, Dip Clin Herb Med
Sam is a degree qualified Medical Herbalist a Master’s in Health Science candidate with 12 years’ clinical experience. Sam is dedicated to the field of nutritional and herbal medicine and has worked in various capacities and is a regular speaker at conferences and events, an educator to her peers. Brain and mental health disorders are on the increase and affect up to 16% of New Zealand adults. Sam will review the current thinking in the aetiology of major depression. Clinical trials and traditional considerations supporting the value of major herbs and nutrients are outlined, together with a systematic therapeutic framework. Underpinning this framework is the fundamental concept of modernity and neuroinflammation, a phenomenon that has only come under the research spotlight this century. Other relevant concepts touched on include the dysregulated stress response in major depression and the beneficial role of healthy communities in treating major depressive disorders.
Sharon Erdrich MHSc [Hons], NZRGON, Dip Nat, Dip Med Herb
Sharon has worked in healthcare for almost forty years, with experience in a broad range of healthcare settings. She has been a lead tutor at Wellpark College of Natural Therapies since 2003, and has also taught at Unitec and the NZ College of Massage. Since completing her Master of Health Science (Nutrition) in 2014, she has developed a strong clinical focus on gut health, in particular Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). This led her to the SIBO Symposium in Portland, Oregon in June this year, where she heard from some of the leaders in this field. Her presentations will explore the complex aetiology and presentation of SIBO, then take a close look at the diagnosis and management of this very common, and underdiagnosed condition.
Corene Humphreys (ND, BHSc, Dip MedHerb, Dip Hom, QTA)
Corene’s experience in laboratory technology and complementary medicine clinical practice provides a depth of knowledge that is remarkable. When working for Genova Diagnostics in the USA, Corene was instrumental in developing a Comprehensive Gastrointestinal Profile, along with other specialty gastrointestinal and metabolic profiles. In 2006, she founded the research company Nutritional Medicine Ltd, which provides research and development support for the natural health industry. Corene has lectured extensively on numerous medical topics and authored chapters in several editions of the Textbook of Natural Medicine and Integrative Medicine. She also mentors physicians around the world on functional medicine. The focus of her presentation is on the fundamentals of microbiology so practitioners can better understand biofilm formation and eradication.
Dr Jim Bartley FRACS
Dr Bartley is an Auckland otolaryngologist and Honorary Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Auckland. Jim has a special interest in facial pain, nasal and sinus disease and vitamin D. Jim has used ultrasound to treat refractory sinus disease and has authored two excellent books. Both Breathing Matters (with Tania Clifton-Smith) a Healing Headaches offer an expert and holistic view of these two common issues. Bacteria are now recognised as existing in two forms - free floating (planktonic), or in sophisticated communities called biofilms, which adhere to both biological and non-biological surfaces. Jim will reveal the mysterious world of this aspect of bacterial behaviour to us.
Dr Joe Rozencwajg NMD
Joe graduated from the Universite Libre de Bruxelles’ Medical School in 1976 and specialised in surgery. He has many strings to his bow, including, but not limited to qualifications in homeopathy, herbalism, homeobotanical medicine, osteopathy, acupuncture and TCM. In this session Joe will address the following, very topical question: What do we have to offer when patients and parents prefer not to go the way of conventional vaccination, no matter what the reason? Joe believes that homeoprophylaxis is the answer. “It is logical, scientific, has been tested over many years and used in the prevention of epidemic diseases, and it is simple to learn and apply”. Joe will explain the basis of this approach and tools for application in practice.
Tracey Gordon Dip ACH
Tracey is fully qualified Hypnotherapist and has been practicing in Auckland since 2010, focusing on modern hypnotic techniques and modalities including Neuro-Com, NLP and Hypno-fertility. Tracey has a unique client-focused approach, and her wide range of techniques and training set her aside from the rest. She has a passion to work with people experiencing trouble sleeping, with stress related illnesses, and also helping couples to conceive naturally or assisted. Tracey will share her expertise and experience on how hypnotherapy can: - Be an excellent complimentary therapy for stress related illness - Assist with sleep to create better habits, reduce anxiety and reframe the sleep experience. - Be of benefit to improve fertility.
Dr Paul Hume ND, DO
Paul is a gifted osteopathic professional with 30 years of practical experience in New Zealand. He trained in New Zealand, is an international member of the American Academy of Osteopathy and attends seminars and conferences in the US each year. Paul has an exceptional gift in sensing past connective tissue injuries that contribute to chronic pain. He uses advanced Balanced Ligamentous Strain and Myofascial release techniques for these much to the joy of his patients. He is very skilled at treating newborns and toddlers for the effects of birth and injuries from falls with cranial osteopathy. He uses visceral manipulation to treat attachments of the internal organs with outstanding results.
Dr Damian Wojick MBChB, DipObs, BSc, DCH, Dip Religious Studies, FIBCMT, FACNEM, FRNZCGP, Master Forensic Medicine (Monash), FFCFM (RCPA)
Dr Wojick founded the Northland Environmental Health Clinic (NEHC) in 2001 to explore a path to integrative medicine by combining spirituality, art/ poetry, philosophy, and scientific research with compassionate service in family medicine as a GP. NEHC has adopted models of healthcare that not only treat symptoms, but also remedy the underlying causes, while supporting the whole person through their experience of illness. Treatment includes pharmaceutical, surgical, and when appropriate non-drug, orthomolecular and natural medicine including therapeutic intravenous vitamin C, magnesium EDTA, and metal detoxification. Dr Wojcik is a clinical metal toxicologist with particular expertise in mercury toxicology, and as a clinician researcher has co-authored two published papers in this field.
Sharon O’Brien MSc Nutrition, PG Dip Dietetics
After completing a degree in Neuroscience in Ireland Sharon spent several years learning everything she could about nutrition; she studied naturopathic nutrition, completed an MSc in Nutrition and became a UK qualified dietitian! Sharon is very interested in the affects nutrition has on physical and mental health. Sharon is a Lead Tutor at Wellpark College of Natural Therapies. Her talk aims to aid clinicians understand the key differences and pros and cons for some commonly prescribed “gut-friendly” diets and specific therapeutic applications of each.
