The economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic has financially strained households throughout New Jersey. Approximately 40% (450,000 renter households) of all New Jersey renter households will not be able to pay their rent next month. New Jersey could experience more than 304,000 eviction filings in the coming months, an estimated 600% increase from pre-COVID-19 levels. As is often the case, the most vulnerable populations are negatively impacted the most and face uncertain circumstances around housing and other necessities like healthcare and education. While the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the federal eviction moratorium earlier this year, low-income New Jersey renters still have protection from eviction from their homes through the end of 2021, thanks to a new state law. NASW-NJ is joined by James Williams, Director of Racial Justice Policy at the Fair Share Housing Center for a discussion about the eviction crisis in our state, its disproportionate impact on communities of color, and protections available to renters who may face eviction.
