Effective therapeutic approaches with clients involves identifying what motivates a client to change.  This entails surfacing what is most meaningful for the client and providing effective tools and resources.  It is critical that the client claims ownership of the treatment plan.  In this workshop, we will explore and discuss holistic approaches for clients to achieve their goals by examining the importance of instilling confidence and utilizing core principles of motivational interviewing.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Understand motivational interviewing model
  2. Know the basic principles of motivating clients

  3. Apply motivational interviewing techniques with a variety of clients
  4. Empower clients through logotherapy

NASW Missouri Chapter

The National Association of Social Workers Missouri Chapter is the largest professional association of social workers in the state, with over 1,400 members. Our members represent NASW throughout the state, living and working in rural, suburban, and urban counties. Our members work in wide range of settings among diverse populations. The Missouri Chapter office is located in in downtown Jefferson City, just blocks from the Capital Building. We are a non-profit professional membership organization for degreed social workers as well as students matriculating through Council of Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited schools.

Gary Behrman
PhD, MSW, M.Div., LCSW

Gary U. Behrman, PhD, MSW, M.Div., LCSW was an Assistant Adjunct Professor at Saint Louis University (SLU) Schools of Social Work, Allied Health, and Medicine for 28 years. Dr. Behrman is recognized for his expertise as clinician, educator, and consultant, and has a counseling practice in St. Louis metropolitan area. He has extensive training in trauma recovery and suicide risk reduction His research and publications are in trauma recovery and the role of spirituality and faith in the healing process.
