Hello Everyone,
Sorry I said "placement" instead of "placemat" in the address.
Join Kris Ogley and learn how to make beautiful Mitered Placements with Inserts.
This rectangular placemat uses the backing fabric, which is larger than the insert fabric, to form the mitered corners that "frame" the featured or inset fabric. The inset becomes the "picture" in the frame.
You have the option of making additional fabric inserts for a quick change in the decor or mood of your table. The supply list below will make four (4) placemats. Additional fabric would be required if you want to make your basic placemats more versatile by making additional inserts.
Please cut out and fuse your fabrics prior to the workshop. The fusing takes a while and you'll spend too much of your workshop time staring at a hot iron while the rest of us are sewing if you don't!
This is a make-it-and-take-it workshop. Bring your sewing machine, foot pedal, power cord, basic sewing supplies (including washable marker) and the following:
Supply List:
Fabric for backing - 1 yard (1-1/3 yds for 6 or 1-7/8 yds for 8)
Fabric for insets - 1/2 yard (1 yd for 6 or 8)
These two fabrics should contrast so the inset is featured in the frame formed by the mitered corners of the background fabric.
Fusible interfacing - 2-2/3 yds (4 yds for 6 or 3-5/8 yds for 8)
Wonder Under - 1-1/4 yds (1-7/8 for 6 or 3-58) for 8)
Thread to match the backing fabric
Optional - Fold-over binding sufficient to finish all edges of the 4 backing fabrics
Cutting:
Backing fabric and interfacing: 21" x 16"
Inset or featured fabric and Wonder Under: 11" x 16"
Pre-workshop assembly:
Fuse the interfacing to the wrong sides of the of the corresponding size backing and inset fabrics.
Fuse the Wonder Under to the wrong side of the interfaced inset fabric, Peel away its paper backing.
Wrong sides together, center the inset on the backing fabric (2-1/2" from all sides) and fuse.
We will finish the backing fabric edges in the workshop. If you want to add the optional fold-over binding bring that to the workshop. You can also serge-finish the edges with a very short stitch length or a rolled edge at home before you come..
