This event is in-person and will be held at the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis, 1581 Beacon St., Brookline, MA.
There is no better way to learn about group process and leadership than to be in an experiential group with a clear contract and well-articulated boundaries. This makes it a secure and effective environment to learn about both groups and oneself; it also means that the emotional experience can be intense. While these groups are process groups, they are not psychotherapy. This full day event involves experiential groups, limited to 12 members each, which offer the opportunity to reflect on both oneself as a member and the work of the leader. A brief period of didactic material and discussion will follow the experiential component of the day.
Participants choose to commit to a Special Interest Group or a General Experience Group.

The internalized father-son relationship is one of the most impactful experiences in life. The developmental importance of this relationship, and the wish/need for sustained connection, sometimes makes it difficult to say what needs to be said. This group, for those who identify as fathers or sons or both, explores how the impact of these internalized relationships affect sense of self, relationships with others and belief in the ability to impact the world.
Group Leaders:
Joel Krieg, LICSW, CGP is in private practice in Cambridge where he sees individuals, groups, couples, and families. He leads six groups in his practice and co-leads OG2 at the Brookline Center. Joel has been involved in NSGP for 13 years in various capacities. He was less active in recent years while his time and energy were focused on family life, specifically co-parenting two young boys. Currently Joel serves on the DEI Committee and the Board of Directors as President-Elect.
Scott Reinhardt, PhD has been in private practice for many years. Scott works with individuals, couples and groups. He has been associated with NSGP in many capacities, serving on the Training Committee, the Newsletter, and the Conference Committee. Additionally, he has consulted with various mental health facilities in the greater Boston area and has led experiential groups for Boston University and Harvard University medical school for Psychologists and Psychiatrists.
Objectives:
The participant will be able to:
1. Identify phases of group development
2. Describe the role of the leaders in various phases of the group.
3. Define concepts of group process and group-as-a-whole dynamics.
4. Explain the importance of group agreement, boundaries, and group culture.
5. Discuss roles in the group, including one’s own role(s).
6. List ways culture, diversity, equity, and inclusiveness play out in the group.
7. Develop greater awareness of the psychological impact of the mother-daughter or father-son relationship, including issues of communication, vulnerability, competition and conflict.
8. Develop a greater understanding of the ways in which the impact of the mother-daughter or father-son relationship can make it difficult to say what we need to in all relationships.
9. Develop a greater understanding of the impact of different types of mother-daughter or father-son relationships, regardless of biological connection.
